Feed My People Significantly Expands Weekend Meal Program

Feed My People Food Bank is pleased to announce the expansion of the Weekend Kids’ Meals Program in 2014. The program is now being offered to every elementary school and pre-kindergarten program in the Eau Claire Area and Chippewa Falls area. Meals are available at additional sites including the Boys and Girls Club.

The Weekend Kids’ Meal Program provides food to take home every Friday for children who may struggle with hunger when school meals are not available. Each bag contains food for two breakfasts, two lunches, fresh fruit and snacks.

Currently, Feed My People is working with 24 schools and community sites to reach students in need. Dedicated volunteers pack over 1,600 bags of food each week. The program added 8 new sites in Chippewa Falls and over 200 more students this year.

“Every Friday, I have the opportunity to give students the WKM bags and see the faces of these students light up because they will have food for the weekend,” said Shannon Larson, a social worker employed in the Chippewa Falls Area Unified School District. “When I deliver WKM bags to a home for a child who is absent, the parents are very appreciative and thankful for the food.”

This year’s program is funded by the Otto Bremer Foundation, Rutledge Charities, the Women’s Giving Circle, a fund of the Eau Claire Community Foundation, the Pain Clinic of Northwestern Wisconsin, area churches and many generous individuals in our community.
